Another year, another Pop Expo in Ottawa!

But that's no small potatoes. We all, well, all of us in Canada at least, know how depressing and seemingly endless the winter season can be. Suddenly going outside is no longer so fun, and your face hurts from the cold, and, well, things just generally suck.

Ok ok, I'll turn off 'Old Fart Mode' for just a second.. But on a more serious note, Pop Expo is THE winter Convention if you're in, or even just anywhere near, Ottawa.

It gives us the magic of Comic Con, the creativity, displays and products of Geek Market, and the chance to partake in or just observe, the Cosplay community.

This year was no exception. We walked towards the EY Centre with baited breath..

How many people would be there? Would it be a success? Would it be so crowded we wouldn't get to see anything? Or would the halls be disappointingly empty?

To our relief, the attendance was great. It was a lively atmosphere, populated halls, and yet the flow of human geekery could flow seemlessly through the winding corridors of comics without delay.

As Pop Expo organisers put it:

"Ottawa Pop Expo’s third edition ended yesterday with several thousand fans attending the two-day event.

The annual fan convention showcased multiple genres in pop culture, including science-fiction, fantasy, horror, video games, animation, toys and comic books.

Over two splendid days, fans in an out of costume beamed and smiled as they posed for pictures, attended celebrity Q&A’s, or hunted down that elusive collectible. "

Event organisers and exhibitors alike were certainly in the generous and giving holiday spirit, as the event raised a significant amount of money and assets for charities. Pop Expo's Press Release on the matter lays out the details:

"The Ottawa Pop Expo organizers were able to raise several thousand dollars to purchase toys, games, comics and geeky apparel for kids at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), just in time for the Holidays.

In addition, the Capital City Garrison, part of the 501st Legion, was also able to raise over $1,500 for Make-A-Wish Canada and The Doctor Who Society of Canada managed to raise $700 for CHEO’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit."

Guests this year included Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager's Ensign Harry Kim), William Shatner (Star Trek's Captain James T Kirk), Ray Park (Star Wars' Darth Maul), Dan Parent (Artist & Writer, Archie Comics), and more!

So where does this leave us in regards to the event as a whole?

"With Ottawa Pop Expo wrapped, the organizers will now be getting the ball rolling for the fifth edition of Ottawa Comiccon, taking place on May 13 to 15, 2016 at the EY Centre. [...] Guests will be announced in the months leading up to Ottawa Comiccon."
